I Wan Jan Puppet Theater Performance, May 14, 2005
At the invitation of TAAMN and TSA, the I Wan Jan Puppet Theater from Taiwan performed a fascinating show on May 14, 2005, at the University of Minnesota St. Paul Student Center Theater to help celebrate the 2005 Taiwanese cultural heritage. More than 250 people packed the theater to watch the world's renowned Theater present a traditional Taiwanese puppet show that could only be seen in Taiwan. This was the first visit of the I Wan Jan Puppet Theater to the Twin Cities. During the two-hour show, the puppeteers dazzled the audience, both children and adults alike, with a love story in a silent play full of delicate gestures and body movements of lifelike puppets and an action-packed adventure replete with incredible kicking, jumping, wrestling, and Kung-fu fighting scenes. The Taiwanese hand puppets might be relatively small; throughout the show, they brought down the house. Laughters often ran across the theater and the audience broke into applause when the puppets showed off amazing acts. After the show, the puppeteers further delighted the audience at the reception by demonstrating the various skills to operate the puppets.
